Who Is Body Recomposition Best For?

Based on research and practical coaching experience, recomposition tends to work best for:

  • Beginners in resistance training
  • Individuals returning to training after a break
  • People with higher body fat levels
  • Those who have not previously followed structured progressive training
  • In some cases, enhanced athletes using performance-enhancing substances (which changes the physiological response completely)

For beginners, the body responds very efficiently to new training stimuli, making it possible to build muscle even without a calorie surplus.

However, for more advanced trainees who have been training consistently for years and are already relatively lean, recomposition becomes significantly slower and less efficient.

When Recomposition Stops Being Optimal

Muscle growth is an energy-demanding process. While recomposition is possible, maximizing muscle gain usually requires a slight calorie surplus to support recovery, performance, and adaptation.

In more advanced individuals, trying to stay in a constant recomposition phase can often lead to stagnation. Instead, a more effective approach is to alternate phases:
